Design for Six Sigma (DFSS/ DMADV)

Overview

The 1-day Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) training course is based on the Six Sigma DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyse, Design & Verify) project management framework.

  • It is primarily used for the design of new processes, products, or services to meet the customer needs and expectations (VOC) while driving down quality costs..

  • It is also used for the re-design/ re-engineering of existing and poorly performing processes, products, or services

DMADV:

  • Complements Six Sigma DMAIC (both methodologies share some common tools, and there are instances where one can lead to the other).

  • Although it is popular, it is not as well known and applied as the DMAIC framework

  • Is the logical addition or part of a Six Sigma strategy applied in the development process for products and processes, aiming to embed six sigma level of quality from the design stage

  • It is used from forward thinking organisations aspiring to achieve high levels of product quality from the design stage

  • It involves the utilisation of powerful and useful statistical tools and techniques to predict and improve quality before building prototypes.

The expected process Sigma level for a product or service designed by using the DFSS framework is at least 4.5 (99.87% yield), but can be 6 Sigma (99.9997% yield) depending the product.

Who Should Attend

The course is designed for Product & Process Design Engineers, Product Managers, Quality Managers, Quality Professionals, Quality Engineers, LSS Green/ Black Belts, Supervisors, Managers and other professionals who want to implement Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) process within an organization.

Learning Objectives

To understand the following:

  • The tools, methods and best practices needed to develop products and processes that can meet Six Sigma levels of quality

  • The fundamentals of important statistical concepts, such as hypothesis testing and confidence intervals

  • How to uncover and describe relationships between variables with statistical modeling tools.

On course completion delegates should be able to:

  • Describe the DMADV framework, including the objectives, deliverables, tools and techniques used

  • Explain the difference between Six Sigma DMAIC and DMADV

  • Contribute in the integration of DFSS into the existing process and product development process

  • Help Identify areas within the existing development process that need to be enhanced or improved, where DFSS is needed.

Course Agenda and Content

  • What is ‘Design for Lean Six Sigma’?

  • ‘Voice of the Customer’

  • Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, Verify (DMADV) framework

  • DMAIC vs. DMADV

  • Other DFSS frameworks that are (primarily) industry-specific (such as IDOV, DMADOV, etc.)

  • DFSS in transactional environment

  • Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and the House of Quality

  • Tolerance Design

  • Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA)

  • Design for Processing

  • Design for Product Life Cycle

  • Design for Quality

  • Design for Reliability

Prerequisites

Proficiency in the English language, willingness to learn, and open mind to new ways of working.

A prerequisite for attending the Design for Six Sigma training is that participants are already familiar with the DMAIC methodology, tools and techniques after completing the LSS Yellow Belt training (acceptable) or the LSS Green Belt training (preferable).

Training Approach

The course covers both theory and practice:

  • Slide-based, instructor-led training sessions, supported by examples

Examination

Upon completion of the training course, you can sit for the exam and become Certified, at Foundation level, in Design for Six Sigma.

Following are the exam details:

  • Duration             45 min.

  • Format               Closed book

  • Nr of questions   30, multiple choice, one correct answer

  • Pass mark          70% ( 21 correct answers).

Certification

The Foundation in Design for Six Sigma certificate will be issued to delegates passing the exam.
