ISO 22000: Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) - Lead Auditor

Introduction

 

The ever-increasing popularity of food safety, as one of the key aspects of the food industry, has boosted demand for organizations in the food supply chain to become certified to the ISO 22000 MSS. Such certification demonstrates commitment from organizations toward the wellbeing of their consumers and provides sustainability in the market.

 

This training course has been developed to reflect the importance of an effective management system audit. It strengthens the knowledge and skills to plan and carry out an FSMS audit in compliance with the guidelines for auditing management systems provided in ISO 19011 and the certification process presented in ISO/IEC 17021-1.

 

Overview

​

This 5-day intensive course enables participants to:

  • Develop the expertise for auditing a Food Safety Management System (FSMS) for compliance with the requirements of ISO 22000 standard

  • Ensure that the organization is operating, producing, and delivering its food-related products and services in a responsible and safe manner by committing to and adopting best FSM practices.

 
The Lead Auditor training will provide to course delegates the knowledge, skills, and ability to:
  • Manage a team of auditors by applying recognised audit principles, procedures, tools, and techniques.

  • Provide the necessary knowledge and skills to proficiently plan and perform internal and external audits in compliance with ISO 19011, and certification process according to ISO/ IEC 17021-1. 

 

Based on practical exercises, interactive sessions, and discussions, the course participants will develop the following skills and competencies necessary to efficiently conduct a FSMS audit:

  • Skills: mastering the audit process, tools, and techniques

  • Competencies: managing audit programmes and audit teams, communicating with customers and audit team members, resolving any conflicts between those participating in the audit, etc. Such competencies are necessary to conduct an audit efficiently and effectively.

  • Perform internal audits of ISO 22000-compliant FSMS following the guidelines of the ISO 19011 standard

  • Perform external audits of ISO 22000-compliant FSMS following the guidelines of ISO 19011 and the specifications of ISO 17021-1

  • Manage a FSMS audit team.

 

Understand the following: 

 

  • Auditor’s role in planning, leading, and following up on a management system audit in accordance with ISO 19011

  • Operation and maintenance of an ISO 22000-compliant FSMS

  • Inter-relationship between FSMS and other ISO standards and regulatory frameworks

  • How meeting the requirements of various internal and external stakeholders, including the organisation adopting the standard, its customers, and regulators.

 

To improve the ability to analyse the internal and external environment of an organization and make effective audit-related decisions in the context of a FSMS.

Day 1: Introduction to the Food Safety Management and ISO 22000

 

  • Course objectives and structure

  • ISO 22000 family of standards

  • ISO 22000 standard and regulatory frameworks

  • Fundamental concepts and principles of food safety management

  • Food Safety Management System (FSMS)

  • FSMS certification process stages, and the inputs/ outputs and steps of each stage.

 

Day 2: Audit Principles, Preparing for, and Conducting an Audit

 

  • Fundamental audit concepts and principles

  • Impact of trends and technology in auditing

  • Audit approach based on objective evidence and risk: evidence-based auditing, and risk-based auditing

  • Initiating an audit

  • Stage 1 audit

 

Day 3: On-Site Audit Activities

 

  • Preparing for stage 2 audit (on-site audit)

  • Stage 2 audit (Part 1)

  • Stage 2 audit (Part 2)

  • Communication during the audit

  • Audit procedures

  • Creating audit test plans

Day 4: Closing the Audit

 

  • Drafting audit findings and non-conformity reports

  • Audit documentation and quality review

  • Closing the audit

  • Evaluation of action plans by the auditor

  • Beyond the initial audit

  • Managing an internal audit programme

  • Competence and evaluation of auditors

 

Day 5: Certification Exam

 

  • End of training

  • Certification exam.

 

Prerequisites

The following are general prerequisites for attending our training courses:

Certification

 

The ISO 22000 Lead Auditor certificate will be issued to delegates passing the exam.

 

The certified Lead Auditor credential is a formal recognition of the auditor’s personal competences. It proves that he/ she is qualified to conduct 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party FSMS audits.
