Business Process Mapping

Introduction

Business process mapping is a technique used to create visual diagrams of business processes and workflows.

Depending on the type of process map, it typically includes the following elements: trigger event, start and end points, tasks/ activities, decisions, arrows (connecting tasks and decisions, and indicating direction of flow), and process actors involve in the process, such as people, departments or IT systems.

The aim of process mapping is to help identify waste, streamline processes and enable better understanding of workflows.

Depending on the process scope and complexity, process maps can be built quickly and help with:

  • Assessing areas of improvement

  • Explaining how a processes works from start to finish and the tasks, decisions, and process actors involved

  • Developing process documentation, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs)

  • Fulfilling process-related requirements, such as those associated with ISO management system standards, e.g. ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems)

  • Project planning and process design.
