Business, Process, Product, and Service Improvement Methods & Frameworks

Definitions and Overview

Methodology: A system of broad principles or rules from which specific methods or procedures may be derived to interpret or solve different problems within the scope of a particular discipline. Unlike an algorithm, a methodology is not a formula but a set of practices.                        Business Dictionary

A methodology does not set out to provide solutions - it is, therefore, not the same as a method. Instead, a methodology offers the theoretical underpinning for understanding which method, set of methods, or best practices can be applied to specific case, for example, to calculate a specific result.

A method responds to how; it is a set of activities, techniques and sequential actions designed and developed to achieve a goal. PRINCE2 is a pretty good example of a method. However, talking about methodologies implies talking about “the  theoretical analysis of the methods applied to a field of study, or the theoretical analysis of the body of methods and principles associated with a branch of knowledge”.

Framework: unlike a method, a framework is a structure, not completely detailed to achieve a defined result:

  • A set of values, principles and practices that constitute a basis

  • Each organization adds its own practices on the above basis to implement it.

  • It is completely different of a method, which establishes the sequential steps to take.

Techniques are different ways of applying the method. In project management, for example, there are also numerous ways to prioritize requirements and/or issues, but PRINCE2 considers only the MoSCoW technique in the official guide.
