ISO 20121: Event Sustainability Management Systems - Requirements with Guidance for Use
Introduction

Events come in all shapes and sizes
-
From rock concerts to the Olympic Games.
-
From the annual meeting of an association of SMEs, to international trade fairs.
-
From a barbeque to raise money for a school visit to a museum, to a political summit of global leaders, like the G7.
Although the visual world of the Internet and social media creates great new possibilities, it does not remove the efficiency, buzz and sheer enjoyment of the face-to-face contact offered by events.

Event management is the application of project management principles, tools and techniques to the creation and development of small and/or large-scale personal or corporate events, such as festivals, conferences, ceremonies, weddings, formal parties, concerts, or conventions.
This discipline:
-
Focuses on meeting the needs and expectations of clients and other stakeholders
-
Involves studying the brand, identifying its target audience, devising the event concept, and coordinating the
technical aspects before launching the event.
Overview
-
Specifies the requirements for an event sustainability management system (ESMS)
-
Is applicable for any type of event, or event-related activity
-
Provides guidance on conforming to those requirements.
The standard is applicable to all sizes, nature, and complexity of a company’s business activities in the event management sector.
-
This enables organizations to address relevant regulatory requirements and manage their operational risks with one uniform framework.
The guidelines support the design, development, implementation, management and maintenance of an ESMS within an organization providing this type of services.

ISO 20121 outlines a framework for managing events in a way that they contribute to the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, environmental, social.
-
By being certified to the standard, the organization adopting it will be capable to organise and manage sustainable events.
Why is Event Sustainability Management Important?

Being certified to ISO 20121 helps ensure that your organization is adhering to both, regulatory requirements, and
contractual obligations.
You may also:

Be able to evaluate the organization’s practices by ensuring that they are aligned with international best practice.
-
Acquire the knowledge to offer advice to both, your clients and your suppliers in the event supply chain about
how to collaborate with you for creation and management of successful events, that meet the requirements of all
stakeholders.
By following the guidelines of the standard, you can support your organization to design, develop, implement, and
maintain an effective event management system that supports sustainability
