ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - Requirements with Guidance for Use

Overview

 

The ISO 45001 Lead Auditor training enables you to develop the necessary expertise to perform a complete Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&SMS) audit by applying widely recognized audit principles, procedures and techniques, while leading a team of auditors.

​

This 5-day intensive course enables participants to gain a thorough understanding and develop the necessary expertise to support an organization in maintaining an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OH&SMS) based on ISO 45001 management system standard (MSS).

​

This includes the full cycle of an internal audit, a.k.a. 1st party audit, as well as external audits known as 2nd and 3rd party audits from effectively planning the audit, to conducting the audit, reporting on the findings, and ensuring that agreed follow up actions are completed. 

 

The content of this training course is:

  • Consistent with the practices established in ISO 19011 Auditing Management Systems

  • Compatible with other members of the ISO 45000 family of standards (see notes).

Learning Objectives

 

On completion of this course, delegates will have:

  • Understand the operations of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&S MS) based on ISO 45001 

  • Acknowledge the correlation between ISO 45001 and other standards and regulatory frameworks

  • Understand the auditor’s role in planning, leading and following-up on a management system audit in accordance with ISO 19011

  • Learn how to interpret the requirements of ISO 45001 in the context of an OH&S MS audit.

 

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Plan, develop and implement an internal or external audit process appropriate to your organisation which supports your OH&S policy.

  • Conduct ISO 45001 audits to professional criteria with confidence, gathering objective evidence through observation, interviewing and document trails to provide factual audit reports that will facilitate continuous improvements to the OH&S programme.

  • Develop their own skills, techniques and competence as an auditor.

  • Assess compliance of an organisation to meet your company’s own internal or external OH&S (e.g. Certification Body) requirements.

Day 1: Introduction to OH&S Management and ISO 45001

Day 2: Audit Principles, Preparation and Conducting an Audit

  • Types of audits (1st, 2nd, and 3rd party audits)

  • Fundamental audit concepts and principles

  • Audit approach, based on evidence and risk

  • The role of objectives, scope, and criteria in the audit process

  • The phases of third party audit by a certification body (Registrar)

  • Planning the audit and audit team selection

  • Lead Auditor responsibilities

  • Initiating the audit and conducting opening meetings

  • Stage 1 audit

  • Preparing the stage 2 (on-site) audit

  • Stage 2 audit - Part 1

 

Day 3: On-site audit activities

  • Stage 2 audit - Part 2

  • Effective communication during the audit

  • Audit procedures

  • Creating audit test plans

  • Drafting audit findings and non-conformity reports (NCR)

 

Day 4: Closing the audit

  • Audit documentation and quality review

  • Effective preparation and presentation of audit conclusions and results

  • Closing the audit - closing meeting

  • Preparing audit conclusions

  • Reporting audit results

  • Evaluating action plans by the auditor

  • Beyond the initial audit

  • Managing an internal audit programme

  • Competence and evaluation of auditors

  • Closing the training

 

Day 5: Certification Exam

 

Prerequisites

​

The following are general prerequisites for attending our training courses:

  • Proficiency in the English language

  • Consideration for other course participants

  • Willingness to actively participate during the training sessions, and an open mind to learn new

      ways of working.

​

ISO 45001 Foundation Certification or basic knowledge of ISO 45001 is strongly recommended

 

Training Approach

 

The course covers both theory and practice:

  • Slide-based training sessions, illustrated with examples

  • Business cases

  • Preparation for the certification exam

  • Practice test (mock exam) similar to the certification exam.

 

Examination

​

  • Duration        1 hour

  • Format          closed book, 50 multiple-choice questions

  • Pass mark    70% (35 correct answers)

 

Competence Domains Being Tested

 

The exam covers the following competence domains:

  • Fundamental principles and concepts of OH&S

  • OH&S best practice based on ISO 45001

  • Planning, development, documentation, implementation, monitoring and measurement for performance evaluation, and continual improvement an

      OH&SMS based on the requirements of the Standard

  • Preparing for an OH&SMS certification audit.

 

Certification

 

The ISO 45001 Lead Implementer certificate will be issued to delegates passing the exam.
