Value Stream Mapping (VSM)

Overview

The 1-day Value Stream Mapping training course is designed those professionals seeking to understand, document and improve their business processes, having in mind what constitutes value from the customer's point of view.

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique used to visualise the flow of information and materials required to bring a product or service to the market. It identifies all tasks and activities, both value-adding and non-value adding.

  • A task, activity, process step, or product feature is non-value adding, from the customer's perspective, if the customer does not require it or is not willing to pay for it.

The VSM process involves:

  • Mapping out the steps to take a product or service from the idea/ concept stage, through to production, sale, delivery, and after sales product support

  • Highlighting areas of Lean ‘waste’ (muda) that can be removed or reduced

  • Creating value stream ‘flow’.

This technique enables the development of a "current state" (AS-IS) VSM and "future/ improved state" map’ (TO-BE) representing business processes after the identified waste (muda) has been removed and the flow of materials and information has improved.

Successful use of VSM can enable organisations to:

  • Improve their business processes, products and services by identifying and removing waste and improving the value stream flow

  • Increase business competitiveness through reduced Lead Times, improved quality, and reduced operating costs.

  • Increase customer satisfaction and loyalty through higher product and service quality, lower cost, faster delivery (QCD).
