Overview

This 5-day intensive course enables participants to:

  • Develop the expertise for auditing an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the requirements of ISO 14001:2015

  • Ensure that the organization is operating, producing and delivering its products and services in an environmentally responsible manner by committing to and adopting best practices.

The Lead Auditor training will provide to course delegates the knowledge, skills and ability to:
  • Manage a team of auditors by applying recognized audit principles, procedures, tools and techniques.

  • Provide the necessary knowledge and skills to proficiently plan and perform internal and external audits in compliance with ISO 1911, and certification process according to ISO 17021. 

 

Based on practical exercises, the participant will develop the following skills and competencies necessary to efficiently conduct an audit:

  • Skills: mastering the audit techniques

  • Competencies: managing audit programs and audit teams and, communicating with customers, conflict resolution, etc.) necessary to efficiently conduct an audit.

Learning objectives

 

Acquire the expertise to:

  • Perform internal audit of EMS based on ISO 14001 following the guidelines of ISO 19011

  • Perform certification audit of EMS based on ISO14001 following the guidelines of ISO 19011 and the specifications of ISO 17021

  • Manage an EMS audit team.

 

Understand the following: 

  • Operation and maintenance of an ISO 14001-compliant EMS

  • Inter-relationship between EMS controls and meeting the requirements of various internal and external stakeholders

 

To improve the ability to analyse the internal and external environment of an organization and make effective audit-related decisions in the context of an EMS.

 

Course Agenda and Content

 

Day 1: Introduction to Environmental Management and ISO 14001

 

  • Course objectives and structure

  • The ISO 14001 standard and the regulatory framework

  • Fundamental principles of environmental management

  • Environmental Management System (EMS)

  • EMS certification process stages, and the inputs and outputs of each stage

 

Day 2: Audit Principles, Preparing for and Conducting a Certification Audit

 

  • Fundamental audit concepts and principles

  • Audit approach based on objective evidence and risk

  • Initiating an audit

  • Stage 1 audit

  • Preparing for stage 2 audit (on-site audit)

  • Stage 2 audit (Part 1)

 

Day 3: On-Site Audit Activities

 

  • Stage 2 audit (Part 2)

  • Communication during the audit

  • Audit procedures

  • Creating audit test plans

  • Drafting audit findings and non-conformity reports

Day 4: Closing the Audit

 

  • Audit documentation and quality review

  • Closing the audit

  • Evaluation of action plans by the auditor

  • Beyond the initial audit

  • Managing an internal audit programme

  • Competence and evaluation of auditors

  • End of training

 

Day 5: Certification Exam

 

Prerequisites

The following are general prerequisites for attending our training courses:

  • Proficiency in the English language

  • Consideration for other course participants

  • Willingness to actively participate during the training sessions, and an open mind to learn new

      ways of working.

 

Training Approach

 

The course covers both theory and practice:

  • Slide-based training sessions, illustrated with examples

  • Business cases

  • Preparation for the Foundation exam

  • Practice test (mock exam) similar to the certification exam.

Examination

 

  • Duration       90 min.

  • Format         Closed book

  • Questions    60 multiple-choice questions

  • Pass mark    70% (42 correct answers)
