ISO Management System Standards (MSS) - Overview

ISO is an acronym that stands for "International Organization for Standardization."

  • Technically the acronym should be "IOFS"; however, ISO is a Greek work deriving from "isos", meaning "equal".

The ISO organisation:

  • Was founded in 1947

  • Has its headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland

  • works with national standards' institutes, such as BSI for the UK, ANSI for the US, and DIN for Germany

  • Is associated with such institutes from 164 countries world-wide.

The purpose of ISO is to facilitate and support national and international trade and commerce, by developing

standards that people world-wide recognise and respect.

  • It achieves this purpose through the participation and support of its members, each representing one of each

      164 countries where ISO operates.

ISO standards are developed by technical committees, each:

  • Formed to address a specific topic, such as quality, security, energy, health & safety, etc.

  • Comprising subject matter experts (SMEs) from representing ISO members

  • Having its own sub-committees and working groups, as appropriate.

Consequently, ISO standards tend to be recognised, accepted, and supported

internationally.

Since its formation 1947, ISO's technical experts have developed standards in every

conceivable business and technical sector and domain, including energy, manufacturing,

engineering, agriculture, construction, computing, metrology, healthcare, transportation,

distribution, and communications.

ISO standards help to ensure that:

  • Products, services, processes, systems, and technologies work properly, safely, and effectively.

  • Organizations actually apply these standards.

The comprehensive, and up to date, list of ISO MSS, categorized by sector, is posted on the ISO website.

ISO's technical experts have also developed several conformity assessment guides.

  • These guides help organizations to verify that supplies, materials, products, processes, services, systems, tools, equipment, and personnel comply with the requirements and guidance in ISO standards.

ISO helps:

  • Make things safer, simpler, and better.

  • Oganisations to become more productive, by doing more with less, and grow in a sustainable and profitable manner.

The above MSS define the requirements for Management Systems (MS), such as for Product or Service quality (QMS), Environmental Management (EMS), Information Security (ISMS), Business Continuity (BCMS), and risk management (RMS).

The objective of developing and implementing a MS is to:

  • Improve an organisation's capability in a specific business management discipline, such as product and service quality management, IT service management, etc.

  • Achieve formal certification of the MS, against the requirements of a selected standard, from an independent third party organisation (certification body or Registrar).

MS certification is considered as strategic business management option, but it is not mandatory.

Business Certification to ISO standards

ISOs (or International Management System Standards) are intertwined into our daily lives as a trusted symbol of quality.

You may be unaware of the fact that you come in contact with the outcome of application of ISO standards on a daily basis.

Hundreds of signs and symbols cross geographical and language barriers to communicate important messages, from your credit card number to the traffic light signs and the marking on the road.

By becoming ISO certified, your business gains a similar level of international recognition by meeting the standards that are important to your industry, and your business stakeholders, including shareholders. Certification to an ISO standard demonstrates management commitment to the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of business management systems in various domains, such as quality, the environment, information security, etc.

ISO Certification Made Simple

The process of being awarded ISO certification by an independent third-party organisation (Registrar) is a way to improve your business.

We can help you through our training courses and consulting services up to, and including, the pre-certification audit and readiness assessment. This will prepare you for the 2-stage certification audit.

The third party (external audit) of the management system of interest will be conducted by a Registrar of your choice.
