Overview

ISO 13053 is an international standard that describes the Six Sigma methodology. This methodology is used for improving business processes in an organization. Many companies have process variations, which often result in defects and errors such as waste abundance.

The standard comprises two parts:

Part 1: The methodology set out in ISO 13053-1 is generic and remains independent of any individual industrial or economic sector.

Part 2: describes the tools and techniques to be used at each phase of the DMAIC approach. The generic approach of Part 1 makes the tools and techniques described in ISO 13053-2:2011 applicable to any sector of activity and any size business seeking to gain a competitive advantage.

The purpose of Six Sigma methodology is to:

  • Identify and significantly reduce variations by using statistical tools and techniques to decrease error rates and increase the level of product or service quality.

  • Improve existing processes, products or services through the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control) methodology

  • Design and develop new products, services, or processes, or re-design/ engineer existing ones through the DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyse, Design and Verify) methodology.
