ISO Management Systems (MS) - Overview
A management system is the way in which an organization manages the interrelated parts of its business to achieve its objectives. These objectives can relate to several different topics, such as:
-
Product or service quality
-
Operational efficiency
-
Environmental protection
-
Information security
-
Business continuity
-
Health and safety in the workplace
-
... and many more.
The level of complexity of the system depends on each organization’s specific context, i.e. the business environment determined by:
-
External factors, such as political, economic, social, technological, legal/ regulatory and environmental
-
Internal factors like type of business, organisational structure, scope of operations, products and/ or services provided, governance, resource capabilities, etc.
-
The requirements of business stakeholders, referred to in ISO standards as "Interested Parties", such as suppliers, customers, shareholders, employees, regulators, etc.
For some organizations, especially the smaller-size ones it may simply mean:
-
Strong leadership from, e.g. the business owner, who clearly defines what is expected from each individual employee, and how they contribute to the organization’s overall objectives
-
Simple documentation related to management system policies, procedures, work instructions, forms, reports, records, etc.
More complex organisations operating, for example, in many different countries, in highly regulated business sectors, such as financial services, communications, healthcare, etc. may need extensive documentation and controls to fulfil their customer requirements, legal obligations, and meet their organizational objectives
ISO management system standards (MSS) help organizations to:
-
Improve their performance, by specifying repeatable steps that organizations consciously implement to achieve their goals and objectives
-
Create an organizational culture that reflexively engages in a continuous cycle of self-evaluation, correction and improvement of operations and processes through heightened employee awareness and management leadership and commitment.
The benefits of an effective management system to an organization include:
-
More efficient use of resources
-
Improved financial performance
-
Improved risk management and protection of people and the environment
-
Increased capability to deliver services and products of consistent quality, thereby increasing value to customers and other stakeholders.
ISO MSS:
-
Are the result of consensus among international experts in global management, leadership strategies, processes and practices
-
Can be implemented by any organization, large or small, in any industry.
