  • Sets the stage for understanding the basic elements of quality management as described in the ISO standards

  • Introduces users to the seven quality management principles and the use of the process approach to achieve continual improvement.

ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management Systems - Requirements

The ISO 9001 standard:

  • Is used when you are seeking to establish a quality management system (QMS) that provides confidence in your organization’s ability to provide products that fulfil customer needs and expectations.

  • Specifies the requirements against which your QMS can be certified by an independent external body.

  • Recognizes that the term “ products and services ” applies to services, processed materials, hardware and software, intended for your customers.

The standard:

  • Is a document (approx. 30 pages)

  • Is available, and can be purchased directly from the ISO organisation or the national standards' organization in each country (BSI in the UK)

  • Sets out the criteria for a quality management system (QMS)

  • Is the only standard in the family that a QMS  can be certified to, although this is not a requirement

  • Is the standard used by independent third parties (registrars) for assessment  of ISO 9001-based QMS for certification purposes

  • Can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its industry sector and field of activity.

The Quality Management Principles (QMP)

ISO 9001 is based on seven quality management principles (QMP):

  • Customer focus

  • Leadership

  • Engagement of people

  • Process approach

  • Improvement

  • Evidence-based decision-making

  • Relationship management.

Using ISO 9001:2015 helps ensure that customers get consistent, good quality products and services, which in turn brings many business benefits.

The Clauses

The contents of ISO 9001:2015 are organised in ten (10) sections known as "the clauses":

  1. Scope
  2. Normative references
  3. Terms and definitions
  4. Context of the organization
  5. Leadership
  6. Planning
  7. Support
  8. Operation
  9. Performance evaluation
  10. Improvement

Certification to ISO 9001:2015

Checking that an organisation's QMS is correctly implemented, and is effective in meeting the set objectives is very important. To ensure that the QMS is functioning properly, it is strongly recommended that an organization performs regular internal audits.

It is a business decision to:

  • Invite an independent certification body (registrar), to verify that their QMS is in conformity to the ISO 9001: 2015 standard; however, this is not a requirement.

  • Invite clients to audit the QMS for themselves.

ISO 19011:  Guidelines for Auditing Management Systems

The ISO 19011 standard:

  • Covers the area of auditing of quality management systems (QMS) and environmental management systems (EMS)

  • Provides guidance on audit programmes, the conduct of internal or external audits, and information on auditor competence

  • Provides an overview of how an audit programme should operate and how management system audits should take place.

Effective audits ensure that an implemented QMS meets the requirements specified in ISO 9001.
