Tips for Organisations Planning Personnel Training in Lean

  • Training should address the who, when and how, as well as content.

    • Lessons unrelated to work are ignored;

    • Too-early lessons are forgotten;

    • Too-late lessons are resented.

  • People rapidly forget the information from formal training and learning, unless they begin to use it in practice right away.

    • After two weeks, most people retain about 30% of learning.

    • It is important to conduct training immediately before the trainees start to use the new knowledge, information and skills from formal training.

    • This is especially true for subjects such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools and techniques and Teamwork.

  • Some training, provides background information and skills that will be necessary through the entire journey to becoming a Lean Enterprise.

    • Examples: Leadership and introductory programmes.

    • Such training is normally delivered at the beginning of a Lean deployment - timing is not usually critical.

  • Other training is specific to certain implementation steps, such as Setup Time Reduction (SMED) or commissioning of a work cell team.

    • Timing is critical and training should be provided just before a particular task begins.
